2-Hour Recorded Webinar with Dr. Fiona Kennedy
Introduction | Post-traumatic responses can involve fight or flight (PTSD) or shutting down (dissociation). This webinar is about the fight or flight reactions: flashbacks, nightmares, anger, avoidance and arousal.
Many of our clients have suffered trauma, and it is vital to address the effects of this. Timing is everything, and knowing which techniques to use. When it comes to working with PTSD, we have a few options. We have exposure techniques such as reliving approaches: trauma focused CBT and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). Also re-scripting, where we use imagery to re-write the trauma story. How do we choose which to use? Complex PTSD involves chronic abuse and neglect in childhood. This is even more challenging. How do we approach trauma/PTSD reactions in adult survivors? How soon should we approach trauma (exposure) along with all the other work we need to do with our client? How much trauma work needs doing? How do we know when the client is ready? This 2 hour webinar uses insights from four therapies: CBT, DBT, ACT and CFT to show how to tackle these questions. |
Balancing Acceptance and Change in Working With Trauma/PTSD | Trauma work usually involves exposure: approaching what the client has previously avoided. Exposure work is clearly needed, but what about validation and acceptance? How much acceptance work should we do and how much change work?
We use clinical examples and live demonstrations – showing how to practically help clients overcome the crippling long lasting effects of PTSD. We demonstrate an evidence-based re-scripting procedure for addressing PTSD, which integrates strategies from four effective therapies. Lastly we show how to troubleshoot problems that may arise when conducting this kind of therapy. |
