Transformational Leadership Training [becomes org. transformation train & consult page]

This ‘2 + 1’ 3 day training, tailored to your organisation’s needs, uses results of a 360 assessment, the MLQ, to discover the current leadership styles of team members.

The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ)

measures a broad range of leadership types from passive leaders, to leaders who give contingent rewards to followers, to leaders who transform their followers into becoming leaders themselves. The MLQ identifies the characteristics of a transformational leader and helps individuals discover how they measure up in their own eyes and in the eyes of those with whom they work. Success can be measured through a retesting program to track changes in leadership style.

MLQ training then helps each team member to develop their own style in the direction of transformational leadership, which is characterised by:

Intellectual Stimulation

Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo; they also encourage creativity among followers. The leader encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn.

Individualized Consideration

Transformational leadership involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, transformational leaders

keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition of the unique contributions of each follower.

Inspirational Motivation

Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers. These leaders are also able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals.

Idealized Influence

The transformational leader serves as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize his or her ideals, attributes and behaviours.

Observations

In their classic text, Transformational Leadership, authors Bass and Riggio explained:
“Transformational leaders…are those who stimulate and inspire followers to both achieve extraordinary outcomes and, in the process, develop their own leadership capacity. Transformational leaders help followers grow and develop into leaders by responding to individual followers’ needs by empowering them and by aligning the objectives and goals of the individual followers, the leader, the group, and the larger organisation.”

Researchers have found that this style of leadership can have a positive effect on the group. “Research evidence clearly shows that groups led by transformational leaders have higher levels of performance and satisfaction than groups led by other types of leaders,” explained psychologist and leadership expert Ronald E. Riggio in an article appearing in Psychology Today. The reason, he suggests, is that transformational leaders believe that their followers can do their best, leading members of the group to feel inspired and empowered.

Are you a transformational leader?

How much do you think the below behaviours are true of you?

  • I would never require a follower to do something that I wouldn’t do myself.
  • I have clear goals for my team.
  • I find it comes natural to inspire others.
  • I celebrate the talents and successes of my followers.
  • I am attentive when it comes to the personal needs of my followers.
  • I challenge my followers to get out of their comfort zones.
  • I believe that team work is the way to success.
  • I encourage my followers to question their most basic way of thinking.
  • Followers have told me that my enthusiasm and positive energy are
    infectious
